Communities across England will be able to organise their own local sporting and cultural events in celebration of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games thanks to the Government which has awarded the programme a £2 million grant.
The funding, which comes from the £20 million Social Action Fund, will support the Community Games Programme which was designed by the Legacy Trust and will be delivered by the YMCA and County Sports Partnership Network.
It is expected that thousands of people will take part in some 2,000 cultural and sporting events and this funding will help provide the support and resources that the local game organisers will need.
Minister for Civil Society Nick Hurd, who announced the funding, said:
“We want everyone to get involved and celebrate the London 2012 Games coming to the UK and this is why we have awarded Community Games £2 million. Community Games will provide the help and support people need to organise a run, a triathlon or even a dance contest display in their local area this summer. This is all part of our drive to create a bigger stronger society where people are empowered to make a difference to their community.
Local people can become involved in the Community Games by organising an event, or volunteering, or participating or being a spectator.
