Waste Recycling Environmental (WREN) has start accepting applications for 2018 funding of projects that provide, maintain or improve certain types of public amenities in England.

The Community Fund scheme is designed to help deliver public amenity projects within 10 miles of a FCC Environment landfill site in WREN’s operating areas in England. All funded projects must be available to the general public.

WREN states that although it would like to fund everybody, it is oversubscribed and has introduced additional criteria to focus funding in line with its objectives:

  • The types of organisations that can apply directly have changed. Applications will be accepted from a registered charity which operates a community facility; a church or parochial church council; a parish or town council or a management committee or user association acting on behalf of a parish or town council; parish or town council; a local authority; or a CASC registered sports club.
  • Organisations that are not one of the above may still be able to apply as a secondary applicant with a parish council, local authority or charity which is involved in their project site. However, this must be discussed with WREN before filling out an application.
  • Project sites must be owned, leased or under appropriate management agreement by either the applicant organisation or the secondary application organisation.
  • Applications will no longer be accepted for projects in Wales as landfill tax in Wales will be replaced by Landfill Disposals Tax.

Grants of between £2,000 and £100,000 are available for projects with a maximum total cost of £500,000.

The funding is to be used for the provision, maintenance or improvement of the following types of public amenity:

  • Village halls and community centres.
  • Public play areas.
  • Publicly available Multi use games areas, skate parks and BMX tracks.
  • Sport and recreation grounds including pavilions and clubhouses with full public access.
  • Churches – community spaces only.
  • Nature reserves.
  • Public gardens, parks, country parks and woodlands with at least dawn to dusk access.
  • Museums.

Competition for funds is high and groups are advised to discuss their eligibility with WREN before applying.
