The English indices of deprivation measures relative deprivation in small areas in England called lower-layer super output areas. It measures relative levels of deprivation in 32,844 small areas or neighbourhoods, called Lower-layer Super Output Areas, in England

The index of multiple deprivation (IMD) is the most widely used of these indices which combines information from seven domains to produce an overall relative measure of deprivation. The seven domains are: Income; Employment; Education and Skills; Health and Disability; Crime; Barriers to Housing Services; Living Environment.

Knowing the IMD for various areas is helpful when writing funding applications, as it lets the funders know where your community area sits within the index with 1 = the most deprived area to 32,844 the least deprived area.
